Your Portfolio

by

Mary Harvey

The Mirriam-Webster Dictionary lists the word “portfolio” as meaning “a set of pictures (as drawings or photographs) either bound in book form, or loose in a folder”.

Many artists have portfolios of their work - do you? If you don’t, you’re missing out on a great marketing opportunity.

Think about it... If you wear your jewelry, how many times has someone asked you about it? Or maybe a coworker is interested in your creations. Do you have anything to show them besides your business card (which you should always carry)?

A portfolio of your work can be as fancy or as simple as you want. Here are some ideas for starting a portfolio:

  1. Make 8x10 blowups of your pictures, put them in clear plastic sheet protectors and put them in a nice binder. This makes for an excellent, professional-looking portfolio, but it isn’t very portable. It is, however, wonderful for taking to galleries for when you are looking to consign your jewelry.
  2. Another idea would be to have regular size pictures of your jewelry, and put them in a small photo album (available at Walmart, Walgreens, etc.). It’s small, and will fit in your purse or briefcase so you can take it with you.
  3. My personal favorite - The high-tech portfolio. If you have a Palm, Blackberry, Ipod, etc, you can create a portable photo album of your creations. I have mine on my Blackberry. Since I always have my phone with me, I always have my portfolio available.

There are many other ways to create your portfolio. Since it’s impossible to carry around all of your jewelry all the time, it’s important to have a way to show off your creations, wherever you may be. A portfolio is the perfect way.

And don’t forget those business cards!
